Every shark attack ever recorded captured on map

This week saw the news of two young people losing limbs in separate shark attacks on the same stretch of beach in North Carolina.

Shark attacks always receive widespread coverage and, as this chart from Statista shows, that is largely due to the fact that they are so rare.

But unfortunately, not as rare in Australia as the rest of the world, especially when it comes to fatal attacks.

According to the chart, Australia recorded 572 attacks and 153 fatal attacks up until February 2015.

In comparison, the US recorded only 35 fatal attacks, though its overall number of shark attacks was higher at 1104.

According to the Florida Museum of Natural History's International Shark Attack File, over the last ten years six people have died worldwide annually from shark attacks.

Between 1990 and 2006 meanwhile 11 people died from shark attacks in the US.

During the same period 16 people died from falling in holes on beaches.

Furthermore, 585,000 people died from malaria in 2013, while hippos kill around 3,000 people on average every year.
