England boss Allardyce quits after being caught in scandal

FOOTBALL: England is on the search for a manager of the national team after Sam Allardyce quit his post after one match and 67 days in charge.

The 61-year-old offered his resignation in a meeting with English Football Association bosses following an investigation by the UK's Daily Telegraph newspaper.

The newspaper released video footage of Allardyce allegedly offering advice on how to "get around” rules on player transfers.

The former West Ham, Newcastle and Bolton boss is also alleged to have used his role to negotiate a deal worth about $800,000 to represent a Far East firm and mocked his predecessor Roy Hodgson.

An FA statement said Allardyce's conduct "was inappropriate” and Gareth Southgate would take temporary charge.

Allardyce met FA chairman Greg Clarke and chief executive Martin Glenn and offered what he called a "sincere and wholehearted apology for my actions”.

"Although it was made clear during the recorded conversations that any proposed arrangements would need the FA's full approval, I recognise I made some comments which have caused embarrassment,” he said.

"As part of the meeting, I was asked to clarify what I said and the context in which the conversations took place. I have co-operated fully in this regard.

"I also regret my comments with regard to other individuals.”

Southgate ruled himself out of the running for the England manager job prior to Allardyce's appointment but will now take charge of the next two World Cup qualifiers with Malta and Slovenia, and could take over permanently.

Bournemouth's Eddie Howe, Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew and former Hull City boss Steve Bruce are also among the possible candidates.
