Engineering change for multinational businesses

ARIZONA may be one of the driest, hottest places on earth, but Cardno manager Shane Gesch insists he has not been sent there as punishment.

"It's surrounded by 250 golf courses - that's why I'm going," he said with a laugh.

The manager of Cardno's Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay offices is busy packing up his life in Australia, including his teacher wife and 14-year-old daughter, in readiness to take up a life-changing career opportunity at the firm's Scottsdale office from July 1.

He has been watching the weather, while making last-minute visa arrangements. It's currently 42 and 43 for the week and summer has just started.

"I believe it gets to 50 or 55 by August, so I think it will be air-conditioned car to air-conditioned house to air-conditioned office."

He will be working in the urban development team, one of the engineering firm's 8000 global staff. It has 290 offices in 85 countries.

Mr Gesch has lived on the Coast for two decades, raising three children, two of whom (aged 18 and 20) will stay in Australia.

"It feels surreal, relocating my family to the super-sized south-west of the USA. We're excited about the cultural change and opportunity," he admitted.

Mr Gesch started with Cardno 25 years ago as a graduate geotechnical engineer.

"I feel privileged to be part of the global Cardno team and to have the opportunity to immerse myself in the booming Las Vegas and Phoenix development industry."

Specialising in urban development, Mr Gesch has extensive experience managing the design, approval and construction phases of major urban development and infrastructure projects on the Sunshine Coast including Kawana Waters, Pelican Waters, Twin Waters and Coolum Industrial Estate.
