Emergency response as Fingal Beach washes to sea
TWEED Shire Council has swung into emergency mode at Fingal Beach.
Another 1.5 metres of ground in front of the surf club has broken away, with massive pieces of concrete falling into the sea.
The beach shower is being removed today as it is now jutting out over the beach, its raw foundations bared by erosion.
The edge of the beach access point is now just 12 metres from the surf club's building and council's work co-ordinators are putting up a security fence to bar access to the beach and club grounds.
"We can try to slow things down, but that's all we can do," said works co-ordinator Bret Mahaffey.
"We have just seen the biggest tides of the year in the last few days.
"We may also have to remove the viewing platform."
Surfer Ben Newman has been using the beach access road for many years.
He said he was shocked by the damage.
"I can't believe it," he said.
"I used to walk down a footpath, but it's all gone."
Another king tide is expected tonight.
