DV monster jailed for punching, choking pregnant partner

A minor dispute about the behaviour of a friend's child led a Logan man to choke his pregnant ex-partner to unconsciousness and incontinence before punching her in the head while she lay defenceless on the ground.

Woodridge man Joshua Stephen Wilkinson, 28, will be eligible for parole after serving five months of a two-and-a-half year head sentence.

He pleaded guilty to five offences: Choking, common assault, breaching a domestic violence order, wilful damage and trespass.

Beenleigh District Court heard the "disgraceful" assault occurred on November 16 last year at Wilkinson's home.

Wilkinson left in the morning to go fishing with a friend, returning mid-afternoon already showing signs of intoxication.

Wilkinson and his then-partner, who had been in an on-off relationship for about four years, the court heard, then had friends over for drinks.

One of the friends raised concerns with Wilkinson's partner about something he had said to her young child, and Wilkinson's partner asked him to apologise.

Wilkinson then attempted to storm out with his two-year-old child in tow.

His partner stopped him at the front door and asked him, "Don't you think this is a bit too much, why are you like this?"

The court heard Wilkinson then grabbed her around the neck and lifted her against a wall so her feet weren't touching the ground.

She lost consciousness and "control of her bladder functions" and crumpled to the floor, at which point Wilkinson then punched her to the head.

The court heard Wilkinson's partner was 11 weeks pregnant at the time, although it was "unclear" if Wilkinson was aware of this at the time.

The court heard Wilkinson had a lengthy criminal history which commenced in 2010 and includes previous domestic violence-type offences.

In June last year in the Beenleigh Magistrates Court, Wilkinson pleaded guilty to 34 offences which included unlawful use of a motor vehicle, stealing and possessing dangerous drugs.

In December in the Brisbane District Court he was sentenced to 21 months' jail for a violent home invasion in 2016 where he punched a man four times in the face and also assaulted a 16-year-old girl.

The wilful damage and trespass charges stemmed from an incident a week prior to the assault, on November 9, when he and a co-accused broke a fence at Springwood to access a vacant home and then fled to Hotel Gloria to hide.
