Road rage turns to "girly punches"

AN ANGRY motorist threw a series of "girly punches" at another driver after a bout of road rage turned physical.

At Ipswich Magistrates Court this week, Emily Myra Jones pleaded guilty to a common assault charge.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Jo Colston said the 22-year-old had been involved in a traffic accident with another vehicle about 11.20am in West Ipswich on September 13.

Jones and the male driver of the other vehicle stopped their cars in the middle of the road and got out to speak to each other.

When a dispute arose about the rules of the road, Jones lost her temper and hit the man in the head numerous times with a closed fist.

She then got back into her vehicle and drove away. Police later arrived at the scene and took an assault complaint from the victim.

After checking Jone's registration details, police located the young woman at her North Booval address.

Sgt Colston said Jones told police she had become angry with the other motorist and hit him in the head at least two times.

She described the hits as "girly punches" and said she knew it was wrong and was remorseful for her behaviour.

In addition to the assault charge, Jones also pleaded guilty to a disqualified driving offence which took place on October 8.

Sgt Colston said Jones had no previous criminal history.

In her defence, Jones said she only drove "down the street" while she was disqualified and didn't think she would get caught.

In relation to the assault charge, she said the traffic incident had simply "escalated" and she "absolutely lost her temper"

"I know it's not right," she said. "I shouldn't have done that."

For both charges, Jones was fined $1600.
