Drinking binge ends with jail

A WOMAN who drank three cartons of beer in a three-day bender before getting behind the wheel has been jailed.

Michelle Ann McCann, 35, was this week jailed for nine months for a string of offences, including disqualified driving, drink driving, possessing dangerous drugs and utensils, and obstructing police.

Ipswich Magistrates Court heard McCann was pulled over at Warwick on May 8, on her way from Inverell, in New South Wales, to Ipswich.

McCann had three female passengers and told police she had drunk one beer, and produced a half-full bottle of VB.

After 20 minutes police conducted a breath test and she blew 0.125.

McCann then admitted to drinking three cartons of VB over the three days leading up to the incident.

On August 13 police went to a home at Leichhardt for a domestic disturbance.

Through the vertical fence palings officers saw McCann sitting on a bed on the lower level of the house smoking a water pipe.

Police entered the room and asked if she had anything to declare, to which McCann said no.

Police Prosecutor Acting Sergeant Brad Dick said the officers saw some items around that could have been used as a weapon, so tried to handcuff McCann.

She refused to co-operate when police asked her to put out her cigarette, and officers were forced to restrain her on the ground.

Police then found the water pipe, a glass bowl of green leaf material and 2.5g of cannabis.

Sgt Dick called for prison time of 12 to 15 months and said McCann's history was poor.

A defence lawyer for McCann said her client had a long-term problem with alcohol, going back 15 years.

The lawyer said on the night McCann was arrested for drink driving, she had only got behind the wheel because the owner of the car was too tired to drive and was falling asleep at the wheel, after the group was returning from a wake.

Magistrate Virginia Sturgess said, "Prison is the only appropriate sentence in my view".

"It is never an option to drive when you've had that much to drink," Ms Sturgess said.

"Your history is appalling."

McCann pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced to nine months prison, with a parole release date set to February 14.

The mother of three was also disqualified from driving for four and a half years.
