Dropping a dress out the window brought couple together

George and Shirley Monaghan have been married for more than half a century.

HAD Shirley not dropped a dress out of her shop window onto the roof, her last name might never have been Monaghan.

It was this chance incident that led her and George, her husband of 55 years, to meet for the first time.

"I was working on a building across the street and she was on the other side in a dressmakers shop," George said.

"I saw her drop a dress out the window and it landed on the roof.

"I went over with a ladder to pick it up for her.

"That was when we first met," he said.

George, who was born and raised in Warwick, was living with his sister at the Gold Coast.

After their chance meeting George asked Shirley out.

"Back then there were still drive-in theatres," he said.

"That was a good way to spend a night."

The pair married in Southport on December 28, 1957.

While they were living at the Gold Coast they had four children, two boys and two girls.

In 1969 they moved to the Sunshine Coast, where they stayed put for 24 years.

The couple then moved back to George's home town, Warwick, where they have spent the past 21 years.

During this time the Monaghans have become well known for their Gibson St Christmas lights display, wining the Best Neighbours category a fortnight ago.

"We have been putting up Christmas lights for the last 54 years.

"When we first started we used 20-30 watt party globes.

"We still have them at home," Shirley said.

The Monaghans did not hold a big celebration for their wedding anniversary at the end of the last month.

"We didn't even go out," Shirley said.

"My daughter surprised us with some prawns.

"They were so yummy.

"We hadn't had them for a long time."
