Armed police swoop on Mary St to arrest robber

POLICE crews descended on Mary St yesterday morning to arrest an alleged armed robber.

For a brief moment, Mary St could have been a scene out of a Hollywood movie as multiple police cars arrived in the shopping district.

The action took place near the Fiveways intersection around 11.30am and caught the interest of plenty of onlookers.

Mary St business owner Tony Goodman said about four police cars were present at the arrest, one of which was blocking vehicle access from Mary St into the Fiveways.

Mr Goodman said he saw two men handcuffed as shoppers and CBD workers watched on.

"It was kind of a good side show," he said.

"There was a lot of police there.

"Police were up there for some time.

"I overheard one onlooker say it looked like a scene out of a Hollywood movie."

The target of the police action was a 21-year-old Kandanga man, who on-duty Gympie police officers in Mary St identified as a man wanted for a robbery.

The man allegedly held up a takeaway shop in Burnside, near Nambour, earlier yesterday.

Police say he used a weapon on staff while demanding money.

They say he walked away from the hold up with a small amount of cash before the takeaway staff contacted police.

The man was charged with one count of armed robbery, but his associate was not charged.

Gympie police said the Kandanga man was in Gympie and headed to a second-hand dealer in Mary St.

They said he was going to the store for reasons unrelated to the armed robbery at Burnside.

The man was detained by Gympie police.

He was later collected, still in custody, by officers from Nambour's Criminal Investigation Branch.

He will be dealt with on the Sunshine Coast.
