IF YOU thought you saw the President of Russia walking through the streets of Ipswich yesterday, don't get too excited - someone has been Putin you on.

In a stunt orchestrated by Channel Ten's The Project, a Vladimir Putin impersonator made a special visit to the city.

The fake Putin took a short tour of the Ipswich Mall flanked by an equally fake security personnel and a media pack for authenticity.

During his brief stint in Ipswich, the fake Putin took a moment to sign autographs, chat with locals and inspect some of the shops in the street.

The results of the social experiment are due to air on The Project tonight.

The real Putin will arrive in Australia this week for the G20 meeting in Brisbane.
