Domestic tourism booms in Fraser

DOMESTIC tourism on the Fraser Coast has shot up in the latest visitor figures released by Tourism Queensland.

The quarterly regional snapshot report showed the Fraser Coast had 609,000 domestic overnight visitors in 2011, an annual increase of 18%.

It is a welcome change for Fraser Coast tourism operators after decreases in the past three quarterly reports.

The domestic figures included a 9% rise in the number of people on holiday and a 15% rise in the number of people visiting friends and family.

International figures however continued to plummet, showing a 24% average annual drop to 128, 000 total visitors.

It included a 26% drop in the number of people on holiday.

The quarterly Tourism Queensland Regional Snapshot said a heavy reliance on the European market had caused a bigger impact on the Fraser Coast than any other region.

The closest decline to the Fraser Coast was in Townsville, which recorded an annual 18% drop in international visitors.

The report said recent trends suggested the decline in European youth travel had started to level out.

Overall, the Fraser Coast recorded an 8% rise on visitor numbers from 2010.

The largest market was by fellow Queenslanders, with a massive 69% of visitors coming from Queensland.

Only 13% of visitors were interstate and 17% were international travellers.

The number of day trippers to the Fraser Coast also increased by 11% to 695,000.

Day trippers spent a total of $103 million across the region in 2011.
