'Disheartening': Year worth of work down the drain

BRENDON Carter, his partner and their three children should have been making memories in their new home.

Instead, the Mackay man, 38, has been working overtime to recoup about $215,000 owed to his business by collapsed building firm JM Kelly - equating to roughly one year's work.

SOS Concrete Constructions is just one of dozens of creditors left in the lurch when JM Kelly folded.

Mr Carter had been running his business for "three to four years” when it became apparent about 18 months ago that he was not going to be paid.

SOS had been working on a project at Eimeo Road State School when payments began coming later and later, before ceasing completely, Mr Carter said.

He grimaced as he spoke about the emotional afternoon he had to return home to give his partner the upsetting news.

"I just felt disbelief at first. It was just disheartening. It was really hard. Telling your wife, your kids. We had a new house we should have been in just before Christmas, which we're still not in,” he said.

"We will get there. It's just all about the catch up now.”

Mr Carter welcomed the announcement this week of a state-funded probe into the collapse, but he was doubtful much would come of it.

"Personally, I think the government needs to be held accountable too,” he exclaimed.

"If we take on a government job we've got to jump through hoops ... where's their due diligence in awarding contracts?”

SOS concreter Jared Panochini, said the situation had been "heartbreaking”.

"It's pretty shocking when you put so much time and effort into getting a job over the line and your boss just cops it.”
