Disappointment with no appeal lodged in paedophile case

NO APPEAL has been lodged against a fully-suspended five-year sentence handed down to convicted child molester Peter John O'Neill.

The news has come as a blow to O'Neill's former Dominic College students, who have been campaigning for Tasmania's state government to extradite the paedophile from his current home in Canberra.

The ex-students have also asked the Director of Public Prosecutions to lodge an appeal against the suspended sentence.

An appeal would have needed to be lodged within 14 days of Chief Justice Alan Blow handing down the sentence on September 9.

But the Supreme Court of Tasmania has confirmed that no appeal has been lodged.

Former student Rachel Grgurevic, who has collected more than 31,560 signatures on a change.org petition to extradite and re-sentence O'Neill, said she and other Dominic alumni were "extremely unhappy".

"There's a lot of very disheartened people," she said.

Ms Grgurevic said she was currently speaking with a lawyer to find out if the former students had any options to take the matter further.
