Diggers in Anzac Day battle
ACROSS The Waves and Diggers will do battle for a spot in the prestigious inter-city round of the Mecano Cup in the drawcard of Anzac Day fixtures played today.
Diggers assistant coach Nathan Darlington said the team was not to be under-estimated despite a slow start to the season.
"We haven't exactly set the world alight but we've been quietly going about our job," he said.
Diggers suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Mecano Cup leaders Moore Park in the competition opener but has progressed through its past four rounds without a loss.
Darlington said the team had trained hard and was beginning to make up for ground lost earlier in the year.
"The team had a pretty slow start to the season this year," he said. "There have been a few disruptions and I think we're still a few weeks behind where we need to be."
Darlington expected the Anzac Day fixture to be a closely contested match with entry into the Mecano Cup and pride on the line.
"This is an important game to test the waters and see where the state of play is for the coming season," he said.
The result will decide which team enters the prestigious inter-city round of the Cup competition.
The inter-city round will feature teams from Bundaberg, Maryborough, Gympie and Hervey Bay.
