Digger’s back home after 420km 'Red Dog' adventure
HE MIGHT not have a feature film made about him but Digger is certainly reminiscent of the famous wandering Pilbara canine Red Dog.
Digger was reunited with his overjoyed owner, Rob Wilson, at Mackay's pound after he went missing from Proserpine more than two weeks ago.
The kelpie has certainly been on the wander, first getting loose in Glenden, almost 300km from Proserpine.
There was a possible sighting of him in Sarina last week before he was finally handed over to a Mackay vet at the weekend - making it a more than 420km journey.
When Digger and Mr Wilson first saw each other there was a puzzled look on the dog's face, almost as if he didn't know what all the fuss was about.
Mr Wilson, though, said it was great news and everyone was happy.
"The family have been down for the last couple of weeks and they were just so excited when we identified him," he said.
Mr Wilson said he highly doubted the beloved family pet would be doing as much roaming now.
Mackay Regional Council local laws officer Ludwig Daucik said Digger was in good condition when left at the pound.
Charlie Wilson, who initially brought Digger's situation to the attention of the Daily Mercury, said she was excited and relieved.
"We never want to let him go anywhere again," she said.
Mrs Wilson said everyone who had heard about the story connected it to Red Dog.
"I think that's why everyone has been so interested in following what happens to him and hoping he did make his way home," she said. "I've been overwhelmed by the support that people have given."
Ms Wilson thanked everyone who helped in the search for Digger.
