Des has his eyes on Australian Survivor's $500,000 prize

SUNSHINE Coast courier driver Des reckons he's a real contender for the inaugural title of Australian Survivor.

The 60-year-old is in Samoa along with 23 other contestants competing for a $500,000 grand prize.

Des and his fellow contestants will be deprived of basic comforts, left to gather their own food and fend for themselves for up to 55 days.

In footage released by Channel 10 he described his strategy of observing and befriending his tribe mates in an effort to become the puppet master as "despicable but admirable".

"I'm going to try to do as little physical work as possible. I'll sit in the background like Kung Fu Panda," he said.

"I'm born to play a villainous game. If they don't get rid of me first, they are gonna be in trouble.

"I don't look like the smartest bloke but I've actually got a few brains."

Des was a Sergeant in the Australian Army for seven years and has experience living in tough conditions.

Since leaving the army he has worked in a variety of different industries including auto-mapping, computing, pest control and publishing.

He has promised his wife of 37 years Caroline to "bring home the bacon".

The show's other contestants, chosen from more than 15,000 applicants, will be doing their best to stop him.

They range in age from 23 to 62 and come from diverse professions including a private investigator, a former professional cricketer, a criminal lawyer and a firefighter.

Jonathan LaPaglia hosts the new series.
