DEEP BLUE KILLER: Latest drowning is fourth in eight years

A FAMILY will spend Christmas grieving the loss of a young man who disappeared under the water at Aqua Lake in Collingwood Park.

Specialist police divers waded through murky waters, swam alongside hazards like old cars and trees, down into the cold dark depths of the old mine site to find the 21-year-old. Within hours a body had been found.

It's the fourth time in eight years police have had to deliver the tragic news to a family; that their child had drowned in Aqua Lake.

In February this year a similar search was carried out for 16-year-old Duncan Wilmott who jumped off the cliffs and never resurfaced.

Duncan's body was found eight days later.

His father Ryan Wilmott called on the council and State Government to do something to ensure no family would suffer the same fate.

Despite his pleas, and the public warnings, the lake is still a hot spot for teens during the summer months.

Since Duncan's death warning signs have been erected to ward off illegal trespassers, highlighting the danger of entering the private property.

That sign has already been destroyed, now barely legible.

A chain link fence borders the area, however, there are large gaps where people can easily walk through.

The council is divided over what should be done.

Deputy Mayor Paul Tully said now was the time for action declaring the 'lake' should be backfilled, but Mayor Paul Pisasale said it wasn't that simple. His thoughts are with the family.
