Dedicated family kicks ahead as future Olympic hopes

WHILE the Kakakios family's immediate focus is next month's Commonwealth Championships, future Olympic Games are already in their sights.

"It's looking good because myself, Petra and Michael have been selected as part of the development squad for Rio,'' oldest brother Stephen said.

"There's 30 athletes that were part of it but I think Australia is looking around and seeing who do we incorporate. That ends up bringing it down to about four athletes for the Olympics.

"We're on our way to that.

"We're probably looking more towards when we peak, which will be around 2020.

"But we may as well go to Rio (2016) if we can.''

Current Australian representative trio Stephen, Michael and John each received a $500 bursary from Somerset Regional Council to help with their competition expenses.

However, like their dedication to training, the family has worked hard doing their own fundraising. They need $15,000 to represent their country.

Anyone able to assist can email the family at: kakakios2@gmail.com.
