Controversial New Acland mine decision expected today

THE Department of Environment and Science is set to decide today whether it will grant an environmental authority to the New Acland Stage 3 Project.

The decision is expected to come from the department at 1pm after the Land Court last year recommended the mining proposal from New Hope Group be rejected.

A statement provided to The Chronicle by the Oakey Coal Action Alliance on behalf of local farmers Frank and Lynn Ashman said granting the EA would pose a risk to the health of nearby residents.

"This is such a big day for our families and our farms. The Acland coal mine puts the future of our community at risk," the statement read.

"We can't run our farms without groundwater and we can't raise healthy families without clean air.

"If the Department of Environment and Science ignores the findings of the Land Court and decides to approve this mine, it will be an unprecedented move that will be devastating for our community."

Mine owner New Hope Group was contacted for comment yesterday.
