Darling Downs butchers snag five Sausage King state titles

ACCORDING to Toowoomba butcher John Yeo there really is something fantastic in sausages from around the region.

And they really are the best - five local sausage makers won top gongs at the recent Sausage King Competition State Final Crowning.

"Five of the winners out of six divisions came from the Outback region which goes from Toowoomba to Charleville,"

Mr Yeo, whose duck and orange flavoured sausage won the poultry section of the competition, said.

"It really speaks a lot for the country butchers. We make the best sausages in the state."

Mr Yeo said he was at the competition on Sunday with his fellow butchers, who were all in shock when one by one their names were read out as winners.

Mark Nolan from Gray's Modern Meat Mart, who won the gourmet/open class for his bush tomato sausages, said he felt pretty happy to have taken out the award.

"We haven't won for a couple of years so it's good," he said.

The Sausage King Competition is Australia's largest high-level sausage awards, designed to discover the best snags in the state. Next, the five winners will battle it out nationally in February.
