Crucial trial as Brothers jostle
BROTHERS play their second and possibly last trial (though not if coach Heath McQueen can help it) against last year’s Gold Coast Rugby League strugglers Hinterland Storm this evening.
Brothers won their first trial against Easts Carina a fortnight ago and McQueen is hoping to organise another before the IRL season starts.
If not, he has some tough decisions to make based on tonight’s clash.
“At the moment we’re just giving everybody a go,” McQueen said.
“I’m just trying to settle on some positions.”
McQueen’s job has been made harder by some of his lesser lights showing up their higher profile colleagues against Carina.
“There are a few spots up for grabs,” McQueen said.
“In the first trial, some blokes threw their hands up.
“They’ll be playing for jerseys this weekend.”
McQueen has designated new signing Danny Coburn and Michael Ryan as co-captains for 2011, with the pair doubling as assistant coaches.
The presence of the former Ipswich Jets duo has ensured intensity at the club this pre-season has lifted a notch or two.
“We’ve changed things around a lot with training,” McQueen said.
“We’re doing things a bit differently.
“Training is a lot more professional.”
McQueen is confident the new faces at the club have come to know what is expected of them.
“They’re coming along well and the players have bonded well,” he said.
“The new blokes are getting used to me as coach and getting used to each other quickly.”
But the club has not been without its setbacks.
Former skipper Tyrone Day is still struggling with the elbow he had operated on after last season while former Goodna prop Andy Piutau has not trained since his house was flooded in January.
Brothers take on Hinterland Storm in A grade and Reserve grade and Brothers Brisbane in under-18s, all at Brothers, Raceview.
In other trials this weekend, Norths take on Maroochydore/Coolum in A grade, reserve grade and under-18s at Maroochydore this evening.
Springfield played Swifts in a Challenge Cup trial at Bob Gibbs Oval last night.
