Creative cakes win major awards at London competition
MERIVALE Cakes and Crafts' students recently won major awards at the Alexandra Palace International Cake Decorating Competition in London.
Toowoomba's most successful cake decorating business is owned by Mary Reid and Cheryl Stace.
Together they took 15 students overseas on their annual tour of the United Kingdom and Europe.
The tour was about more than cake decorating, it covered a range of food and tourism experiences.
The highlight was winning at the international competition, with all cakes created by students and ex-students.
They were well-packed to travel on the long-haul flight from Brisbane to Manchester and then to London by road.
All exhibits including the delicate pre-made sugar decorations arrived in the UK without damage.
The results for the winning students included five places in the international category.
Narelle Brown won gold, Jodi Sibley and Miranda Sutrin won silver, and Robyn Bargh and Ann Shepherd won bronze.
The 2017 Australian Bridal Industry Academy international and state winner Caitlin Mitchell also won a bronze award for her creation.
Delegates on the 25-day cake tour visited some of Europe's most acclaimed cake and chocolate companies in Manchester including the world famous Slattery's Chocolate School and the Cake Boy and Biscuiteers.
