Crash uncovers weapons and drugs

POLICE have charged a Redbank Plains man with possession of a home-made handgun, knives and amphetamines following a car crash near the Gold Coast.

The 24-year-old was driving a vehicle which hit a guard rail at Helensvale about 11.30am Monday.

It will be alleged that the man was seen placing items into a backpack prior to getting into the ambulance.

Police claim that a search of the man's belongings located a home-made handgun, a large round of ammunition, three knives, a quantity of amphetamines and some cash.

The man was charged with unlawful possession of weapons, possession of a knife in a public place, possession of a dangerous drug, possession of anything for use in the commission of a crime, and possession of property suspected of being stolen.

He is due to face Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
