Concrete thrown at mum and baby on highway

A MOTHER driving with her new baby in her car says she had to swerve to avoid a lump of concrete thrown from an overpass on the Cunningham Highway.

Josephine Herman was travelling in a car with her husband and seven-week-old daughter Valentina when she narrowly avoided colliding with the object after it sailed off the Barclay St overpass near Ipswich.

"You just don't expect that kind of thing to happen," she said.

"It was only because for some weird reason I looked up at the overpass as I was driving, and I saw the shadow of a person throw something up in the air.

"Then a giant thing came down so I swerved to miss it."

Ms Herman said the object was about the size of a football.

"I had to fully swerve. I'm just lucky there was no one else in the other lane," she said.

"I was the only person around. We went back the next day and went past and it was actually a piece of concrete."

Ms Herman said she called police to report the incident.

"He just said they'd tell the investigators if they got any reports of property damage," she said.

Ms Herman said if she hadn't been paying attention, the object would have smashed through her windscreen.

"I couldn't see much of the person, I just saw the shadow of the person," she said.

"Imagine if it hit a car and there was someone next to that car. It just would have been absolutely devastating. You know you have to be alert when you're driving, but you don't think you have to look up there."

A Queensland Police spokesman said anyone with information should contact police.

"Throwing rocks onto a roadway is an offence and this sort of behaviour could have terrible consequences for any victims," he said.

"People committing this offence would be charged and the police urge anyone with further information to contact Crime Stoppers."
