Council's last grand design for CBD ended in heritage lost

IN THE February 20 edition of the QT, the incomparable Beryl Johnston published a faded photograph of the North Star Hotel which occupied the corner of Brisbane and Ellenborough Sts and formed the corner piece for a row of similar buildings all the way to Nicholas St.

Ipswich lost these iconic buildings to the last "grand design" for redevelopment of the CBD.

It clearly didn't work and had a very faint resemblance to the airy drawings displayed on the front page of the QT of the time.

The North Star Hotel and its associated buildings were lost for all time to leave us with the present empty heart of the city.

Remember this before endorsing the newest edition of the "grand design" promoted by the Ipswich City Council and the directors of Ipswich City Properties, again accompanied by another set of airy drawings published on the front page of the QT.
