Council suspends animal transfers

THE transfer of animals to The University of Queensland’s Gatton campus has been suspended by Logan City Council.

Logan City Council has this afternoon announced it will stop the transfer of animals to UQ pending a decision by the State Government on the use of pound animals for the training of student vets.

Acting Chief Executive Officer, Oliver Simon said council understood the Animal Welfare Advisory Committee had provided a number of recommendations to the State Government about the supply of pound animals for veterinary teaching purposes.

"As yet Council has not been briefed by the State Government about these recommendations but is seeking clarification on the Animal Welfare Advisory Committee's recommendations," he said.

"Council will therefore suspend all transfers to the University of Queensland as of January 6.
