Cost of education going through the roof

PARENTS who think education is expensive these days are right, especially in the non-state system.

"The cost of education in Australia has risen by more than double the rate of inflation in the past 10 years," says Australian Scholarships Group CEO John Velegrinis.

The group offers loan services to parents having trouble meeting school fee deadlines and estimates the lifetime cost of educating a child in the state education system is $50,950 in regional Queensland, compared to $58,259 for parents in a metropolitan school.

In the church-based system, which is the non-state alternative in Gympie Region, the state average lifetime cost of educating a child is $199,880 in regional Queensland and $242,533 in the Brisbane area.

Mr Velegrinis says the figures represent "hundreds of thousands of reasons to make financial plans for education".

Even in the "free" state system, the $50,950 lifetime cost of education in regional areas is big money for most parents, although it is cheaper than the average cost in metropolitan Brisbane of $58,259 a student.

More than one in five young Queenslanders going to a state school this year are from Gympie's North Coast region.

Figures indicating we live in a growing state and region with a growing educational obligation, were released yesterday by the Department of Education, Training and Employment.

For all Gympie region schools, state and non-state, that obligation begins for this year when students report to school next Tuesday.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Education Training and Employment said projected enrolments (based on previous figures and numbers enrolled so far) were well up on last year, statewide and in our region.

"For Queensland, projected enrolments are 777,000 (517,000 state and 260,000 non-state)," she said.
