Contenders aplenty rev up for class crowns

QUEENSLAND'S premier amateur motor racing series, the Queensland Raceways' Drivers Championship, wraps up for another year at Queensland Raceway this weekend.

The fifth and final round of the 2012 series features more than 200 racers in QR Sports & Sedans, Group N, Geminis, Production Sports, Excels and Trans Ams.

They'll take to the track in what is sure to be a weekend of fierce competition across all classes, with drivers pushing their cars to the limit for a shot at the podium.

"2012 has been a gruelling year for racing drivers in many categories with any failure leading to slipping down the ladder for Championship points," Queensland Raceways CEO John Tetley said.

"As this is the final round for many of the categories before the three-month summer break, there's a distinct whiff of win-it-or-bin-it in the air."

This weekend there are at least 14 drivers across the categories in contention for a series champion trophy.

"The closeness of the season's results mean the 'go hard or go home' strategy is the only one to go with," Tetley said.

Crowd favourites Callum Whatmore, in the Nissan SIL80, and the spectacular Mick Apps, in his Kermit-green Holden Commodore, will be lining up to battle it out for the first place titles of QR Sportscars and Sedans respectively.

Whatmore has been dominant all season in the QR Sportscar class, while Apps will have a serious championship battle on his hands in the QR Sedans with the return of Dwayne Taylor in his Holden Torana, who is only two points behind going into the final round.

Another winner takes all scenario is Christopher McIlwain, in his Datsun 1600, ahead of Bruce Forsyth in his BMW 2002 and Allan Saunderson in the Ford Cortina.

Given that the QRDC round is the grand final of the Black Trucks/Tranzmile QLD Cup for 2012 there will be plenty of on-track action in the fight for the end-of-year trophies.

Brian Smallwood goes into the weekend with a strong lead in the field of 21 Geminis.

Production Sportscars will be running the two classes, featuring a wide mix of marques, including Nissan, Porsche, BMW, Corvette, Lotus and the popular Mazda MX5's.
