Construction work has started on a Maleny service station as signs go up in the town voicing strong opposition to the project.

Lanskey Constructions has been contracted by Pearl Energy to build the Mobil Maleny service station on Bunya St.

Directed by Noosa Heads resident Paul Lanskey and Brisbane-based Ross Williams, Lanskey Constructions is a privately owned construction company servicing Australia and New Zealand.

The project has stirred strong reaction from some residents who want Sunshine Coast Council to perform air quality testing at the site before it starts pumping.

Signs have started appearing across the town as anger grows in the community.

Dr Adrian McCallum is urging the council to perform the testing so data can be compared once the station is operating.

His children go to Maleny State School, which is across the road from the site.

Despite community members rallying against the development it was approved without public consultation after the council implemented planning scheme changes that made it code assessable.

In a letter to residents and nearby stakeholders, project manager Robert McGuckin wrote works were expected to be complete by May.

Mr McGuckin informed residents changed traffic conditions would include traffic control and reduced speed limits through the work site.

"All efforts will be made to minimise disruptions, however, construction impacts may include noise, dust, and reversing beepers," he wrote.
