COMMENT: Christmas show was top notch

THAT old saying that the best things in life are free certainly rings true at the Mayor's Carols by Candlelight.

I took my family along this year after some gentle urging by a former workmate, and I wasn't disappointed.

What struck me about the scene at North Ipswich Reserve on Saturday night was the pure scale of the show that this city puts on for people of all ages.

Peter Combe and his band were rocking out as we arrived, and while there wasn't much room left down close to the stage, you had no problems seeing or hearing what was going on, even from the grassy hill right at the back.

I hadn't seen an audio-visual set-up of this quality since watching AC/DC at QEII stadium a few months back.

And while I wasn't in among the mosh pit with a plastic cup full of rum and coke in hand, thrashing my noggin back and forth, I was having a great time just watching all the over-excited kids (mine included) doing what kids should be doing during their summer holidays: running around outside without a care in the world.

We really are lucky to have such a huge free concert here in Ipswich.

Long may it continue.
