Club excited about Cup Day

THE Lockyer Valley Race Club is all set for its biggest meeting of the year tomorrow.

Lockyer Valley Race Club president Terry Kirkwood said they were ready for a big long weekend meet at Burgess Park with an eight-race card.

"Come along for a great day at the races," Mr Kirkwood said.

"It's a TAB meeting and it's the only meeting on in Queensland this Sunday."

It seems a long time since thousands watched Oompala win the Gatton Cup on his way to running third to Jeune in the 1994 Melbourne Cup.

That was before peak body Queensland Racing overhauled the racing industry, which included removing TAB funding from country clubs.

The number of race meetings dropped, crowds and the number of horses racing at the Gatton track fell and prize money plummeted.

But Lockyer Race Club has fought back and tomorrow's meeting should be another sign the tide is turning.

"It should be a beautiful winters day on Sunday at the races and you can have a sleep-in on Monday," Mr Kirkwood said.

There will be on-course tote and bookies with a big screen mounted on a truck for people to watch the races. Eftpos will also be available.

There will also be Fashions on the Field and a raffle to support the Hawks' TRL princess and junior princess.
