Cleaning antics a dead giveaway

A MAN spotted drunkenly washing the windscreens of other people's cars at a service station pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of liquor.

But Anthony Edward Gosbee had not even started the engine when the offence occurred last week.

After being tipped off by the service station operator who saw him behaving oddly, police found 46-year-old Gosbee snoring in the driver's seat of his car on October 7 with the ignition lights on and the keys in his pocket.

His bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and unsteadiness led them to conduct a breath-test which came back at 0.18%.

Gosbee told the court he had left after getting drunk and arguing with his partner, and was sleeping in his car. He did not realise he could get booked for drink-driving without the engine started, but accepted the charges even though he had lost his job as a result.

Magistrate John Smith said given the nature of the offence and the hardship it had caused, he would keep the penalty to the minimum of a $1500 fine. He imposed a nine month disqualification period.
