LETTERS: Petersen says city's heritage needs protecting

I AGREE with Mr Thomson (letter in the QT - 10th Nov).

There is an urgent need to protect our beautiful, old buildings in the CBD.

Recently I spoke with business owners in the Top of Town about this very issue.

There are prospects in Ipswich to be exploited.

It's important to nurture these opportunities and not bulldoze them down.

The architectural significance and splendour of many of our old CBD buildings provide openings for educational, social, cultural, historical and economic growth and development.

Let's not take away or destroy what makes us special in Ipswich. Rather, let's give our old buildings of historical value the TLC, repair and restoration they need.

Finally, in consultation with the Ipswich community, I'd like to go further than this.

We have many old Queenslanders and "retro" homes in Ipswich, which, I think, if protected and nurtured, will offer opportunities for us into our future.

DR PATRICIA PETERSEN, Mayoral candidate
