Man dies 10 days after accident

AN Ipswich man has died 10 days after being seriously injured in a traffic accident in Mackay.

The 51-year-old suffered head and neck injuries when his sedan collided with a minibus at the intersection of Longhair and Milton streets, two kilometres from Mackay's CBD, about 11.30pm on August 1.

He was being treated in the intensive care unit at Mackay Hospital until he died in the early hours of yesterday.

There were two passengers on the minibus, of which one suffered only minor injuries.

Mackay police officer Senior Constable Tara Stanton said the fatal collision occurred on a 60kmh section of Milton Street where two side roads - Longhair Street and Evan Street - intersect.

Const Stanton said it appeared the man had struck the front right-hand side of the bus, which would have had right-of-way, after entering Milton Street.

“Police are investigating the possibility that he wasn't wearing a seatbelt,” Const Stanton said.

Excessive speed was not believed to have been a factor in the accident.

The deceased man's name was not released yesterday.

His death was the 224th on Queensland roads so far this year.

Another fatal car accident on the Gold Coast yesterday is likely to push the official figure up to 225 deaths - 22 more than this time last year.
