Cheers to best craft beers

THE big guys of brewing will step aside as part of a celebration of the country's best craft beer at the Yamanto Tavern this weekend.

Already a big promoter of Australian-made craft beer, the popular Ipswich pub will turn it up a notch in order to give local amber fluid connoisseurs the chance to taste the top 10 brews from this year's Critics' Choice: Australia's Best Beers countdown.

Yamanto Tavern manager Peter Coultas said all the major labels would be taken off the taps and replaced with the top 10 craft beers, so that they could be enjoyed icy cold all weekend.

The event has been coined Turning off the Mains, and will kick off at 5pm on Friday.

Beers that aren't available in keg form will be sold by the stubby.

"We've secured the top 10 beers in the country - some of the kegs are already here and some are on their way," Mr Coultas said.

"No tickets are required for entry and anyone can come in and enjoy some of the best small-batch beers available."

The Critics' Choice countdown began on March 19, so only part of the list has been publicly announced so far.

The Queensland Times can confirm that fine Western Australian drop Feral Brewing Hop Hog India Pale Ale will be one of the beers on offer at the Y-Bar during the weekend.

Mr Coultas said Turning off the Mains was a great teaser for the tavern's new dedicated craft beer bar, which is currently under construction and should be completed within four months.

The pub has enjoyed a great deal of success since dramatically increasing its range of craft beers and ciders over the past year.

There are now 101 craft beers and ciders available at the tavern.

Peak Crossing beer maker Wade Curtis has had his 4 Degrees Pale Ale and 4 Degrees Summer Wheat on tap at Yamanto for several months and now has a strong following.

Mr Coultas said he liked the idea of having more locally-produced beers on tap.

"There's no way I could take 4 Degrees off the tap now - too many people drink it," he said.

"Wade has carved out a fantastic following - he has tapped into a niche market."
