Up to 224 charities in NSW, Qld to have registration revoked

A HOST of Queensland and New South Wales charities face having their registration revoked after an investigation revealed the majority of them are no longer operating.

The national regulator's move to revoke the registration status of 144 Queensland and 80 NSW charities follows an exhaustive search.

They are part of a group of 400 charities nationwide facing the same fate.

Those on the list include school associations, churches, welfare charities and relief funds.

Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission chief executive Susan Pascoe said on Tuesday the organisation had been proactively trying to find these charities.

"We have been working hard to contact these charities through direct mail and phone calls, internet searches, government databases, sector peak bodies, social media and advertising," she said.

"We are also urging people with information about charities on the list to get in touch with the ACNC as soon as possible to ensure charities that are still operating are not incorrectly removed.

"If a charity is revoked, but later found to still be operating, the ACNC will work with the charity to restore their charity status as soon as possible."

Ms Pascoe said it was extremely important to have an accurate and up-to-date charity register.

"Revoking the charity status of organisations that we believe are no longer operating is necessary to maintaining and building the charity register," she said.

"To date the charity register has received more than 450,000 views so therefore it is important we continuously work to verify the information, so that donors, funders and members of the public have access to reliable and credible information."
