State closure of Barrett Adolescent Centre is a "betrayal"

BUNDAMBA MP Jo-Ann Miller has lashed the State Government's decision to close the Barrett Adolescent Centre in Wacol.

The centre is Queensland's only specialist mental health unit for the care and education of adolescents and Ms Miller said its closure was "a betrayal of the state's most vulnerable young people".

Young people receiving treatment at the centre will be moved into a new care model by early next year. Health Minister Lawrence Springborg defended the controversial move and said the decision followed advice from an expert panel and former Barrett Centre patients.

"They are working towards a final decision with regards to a model of care around about the early part of 2014," he said.

"The transition of those young people...may involve in-patient, complex treatment and also support from the Department of Education for the educational needs of those young persons with complex mental health needs."

But Ms Miller said the Barrett Adolescent Centre is unique and had a proven record of success in helping those with severe mental illness.

"Lawrence Springborg has sanctioned its closure despite an expert clinical review which concluded that its residential model of care alongside an integrated special school is an essential component of a statewide mental health service for young people," she said.
