CNN broadcaster Piers Morgan took a break from his gun control campaign in the US to tip his hat to Oscars host Seth MacFarlane, whom he reckons will be a "wonderfully innapropriate, snarky and hilarious" host.

The Academy has also released five new Oscars promos on its official YouTube channel following last night's nominees announcement.

One of the short clips features MacFarlane saying he's really Lincoln star and best actor nominee Daniel Day-Lewis, "because I'm just that good".

In another he encourages viewers to connect with the Awards via Twitter, on which MacFarlane himself has more than three million followers.

But the Family Guy creator did ruffle a few feathers during this morning's nominations broadcast, which he presented with Emma Stone, when he cracked a Hitler joke.

He responded to the critisim on Twitter:

The Academy Awards will be broadcast in the US on February 24 on ABC, and in Australia on Channel 9/WIN on February 25.
