Angler releases 80kg shark after missing weigh-in
AN 80kg white spot shovelnose shark was probably the biggest fish caught on Sunday at the annual Pier Festival in Urangan.
"The shark wasn't a category in the comp so I gave it a kiss and let it go in the water," he said.
A 7.53kg mackerel and a 1.3kg flathead were among the other big fish caught at the competition.
Nick Finnis, a senior citizen who caught the mackerel, walked away with an Alvey reel after winning the competition.
The festival saw more than 3000 families and children indulge in the family fun day.
Fishing competition co-ordinator George Duck said the attendance was great and people had a good time thanks to the fine weather and high tide.
The festival, organised by the Fraser Lions Club, started at 6am and ended at 2.30pm.
"The Lions Club did an amazing job," Mr Duck said.
"Everyone was entertained by a magician and were served with hot food."
"A lot of children came to the event and there were plenty of holiday-goers too."
There were also quite a few people who walked away with seafood trays after winning raffles.
