Caring Kelly heads to Peru

IT would be pretty safe to say the mountains of Curahuasi, Peru, are the last thing most 15-year-old girls are thinking about.

But for Toowoomba State High School student Kelly Edser, the small mountain village is at the front of her mind.

Kelly has managed to convince her parents to let her spend three weeks as a volunteer at a hospital in Curahuasi helping the poorest of the poor.

The hospital was set up by close family friend and former Toowoomba radiologist Lyndal Maxwell.

"Lyndal has known me since I was a baby and after hearing her speak when she was in Toowoomba recently, I knew I wanted to go over and try it for myself," Kelly said.

"I would love to study to become a GP when I finish school and as soon as I finish my studies I would love to follow in Lyndal's footsteps, especially if this trip is as great as I expect it to be."

Kelly's father Ross, who will accompany Kelly on her trip, said he was hesitant at first to let his young daughter travel to Peru.

"Initially, I was sceptical and questioned whether Kelly was clear minded enough to do it," he said.

"But she just had so much focus and we wanted to help her really dial that in."
