Healthy tips for cardiac patients

MARGARET Mortimore picked up some helpful advice when she dropped into the supermarket on Friday.

Mrs Mortimore was one of seven former and current cardiac patients who joined a food tour through Coles Mount Pleasant led by Mater Misericordiae Hospital dietician Fiona Lynch.

She said she was happy to listen to Mrs Lynch's tips about heart-healthy foods.

When it came to fruit and vegetables, Mrs Lynch said different colours offered different nutritional values.

"Ten pieces of fruit means 800 calories a day. So I'd generally say two or a maximum of three pieces per day."

Nutrition was also in the skin of fruit and vegetables, Mrs Lynch said.

"It's best to leave the skin on. If you have to take the skin off lightly peel it. Otherwise you'll lose a lot of nutrition."

Avocadoes were healthy but not necessarily great for your waistline, she said.

"They have healthy fats but they're still high in fat if you eat a lot of them.

"Olives have the disadvantage of being salty."

 

WHAT TO EAT

  • Opt for wholegrain or wholemeal breads
  • Seeded breads are also a healthier option than white breads
  • When eating olives the recommended limit is four a day
  • For avocadoes, it's advised that you don't eat more than a quarter a day
  • Be cautious not to eat too much fruit in summer just because it's available
  • To avoid binge sessions treat yourself now and then. For example, have peanut butter on toast one day
