UPDATE 2.09PM: THE New England Hwy has been reopened after a fatal crash on Toowoomba's southern outskirts.

Police are piecing together the circumstances which led to a 4WD and a crane colliding about 500m south of the intersection with Nelson St about 8.20am today.

A 37-year-old woman from the Toowoomba area was killed and three of her children were injured, two of them seriously.

The 35-year-old man who was driving the truck, also from the Toowoomba area, was taken to Toowoomba Hospital with minor back injuries.

UPDATE 12.26PM: Police have confirmed the victim of this morning's fatal crash on the New England Hwy was a 37-year-old woman from the Toowoomba area.

Darling Downs district officer Inspector Mike Curtin said the woman's five-year-old son, seven-year-old daughter and 11-year-old daughter were in the car with her at the time of the crash.

He said a crane truck travelling south and the 4WD in which the family was travelling collided about 500m south of the Nelson St intersection at 8.20am.

The children were taken to Toowoomba Hospital.

A Toowoomba Hospital spokeswoman said two of the children were in a serious condition while the third child was in a stable condition.

The driver of the crane truck was taken to Toowoomba Hospital with minor back injuries.

Police expect the highway will remain closed for some time while investigations continue.

11.10AM: Three children have been taken to Toowoomba Hospital for treatment of serious injuries sustained when the car they were travelling in and a crane truck collided on the New England Hwy this morning.

A Toowoomba Hospital spokeswoman said two of the children were in a serious condition and another was in a stable condition.

The crash claimed the life of the woman who was driving the car in which the children were travelling.

 

8.40AM: A woman has been killed and three children are seriously injured after a truck and car collided on the New England Hwy, just south of Toowoomba.

The crash was reported about 8.30am.

Initial reports suggest that the truck has rolled on to the car.

Emergency services are at the scene about 500 metres south of the Nelson and Ruthven Sts intersection.

The New England Hwy is closed in both directions at the scene of the crash.
