LNP backs Tony Perrett for state election

QUEENSLAND'S ruling Liberal National Party has backed Gympie Region deputy mayor Tony Perrett to be its candidate in next year's state election.

The news was announced by LNP president Bruce McIver.

"Tony has a long track record as a strong advocate for the people of Gympie,'' Mr McIver said.

"As a local councillor since 2003 and deputy mayor since 2012 he's aware of the issues that matter to the people of Gympie and is committed to working as part of the strong LNP team to ensure a bright future for his community,"

Cr Perrett said he would stand aside as councillor when the election was called and would cease to be a councillor immediately if elected

"This LNP Government has a strong plan to create opportunities for the people of Gympie and I'm passionate about our community remaining a priority,'' he said.

"Apart from my role with the Gympie Regional Council, I have a strong connection to this region through my involvement with several community, sporting and business associations.

"Dealing with population growth and creating jobs, especially for our young people, are two of my priorities.

"As part of the LNP team, I'm committed to supporting the development of our region with innovative policies," he said.

Mr McIver said Cr Perrett's pre-selection followed incumbent Member for Gympie David Gibson's decision to retire at the next election.

Mr Gibson announced his retirement after Rainbow Beach businessman Scott Elms revealed information about criminal issues in Mr Gibson's past.

Mr McIver thanked Mr Gibson for his service.
