Can-Do picks his greatest moments

FORMER premier Campbell Newman has had one of the country's most prestigious civic honours bestowed upon him: Officer of the Order of Australia.

Mr Newman will celebrate the honour today at an Australia Day party with his former political team and proud wife Lisa - who burst into tears of joy when she found out about the award.

"It's fantastic to be recognised in this way by the nation and its people," said Mr Newman, also a former lord mayor of Brisbane.

"It's a great honour for myself, but particularly it's an honour for my family who supported me during my time in politics."

Reflecting on his time in public life, Mr Newman said one of his proudest achievements while leading Queensland was the apology he gave on behalf of the state to the victims of forced adoption.

He singled out the reforms his government made to health systems, including the establishment of local hospital boards, which he said lifted performances across the state.

Mr Newman also pointed to his work spearheading major city-shaping tunnels, roads and bridge projects during his seven years running Brisbane City Council, as well as putting the city back together after the 2011 floods.

"Politics is getting harder and more challenging," he said.

"But you know what - I hope that irrespective of political orientation, that good men and women will continue to put their hands up and serve.

"We need that more than ever."

Mr Newman said he particularly appreciated the efforts his political staff made to support him during his career.
