Butcher bargains with mine bosses
LOCAL butcher Gary Richards has been chewing the fat with mining big-wigs as he attempts to increase his stake in the mining boom.
Mr Richards's Whale City Factory and Bulk Meats has recently been granted accreditation to submit tenders and supply Queensland mining camps with meat.
New contracts for Mr Richards means a boost for the Fraser Coast region and more jobs.
He said meat products would be transported from Hervey Bay to camps and that his operation had the ability to increase production if the demand was there.
A former construction worker, Mr Richards is making big impacts in local business as he pioneers diversity in butchery.
"I've got a direction now of where to go and who to go to," Mr Richards said. "We have the facilities here, now the portfolio.
"I won a consultancy through the (state) government which was only granted to 50 people in Queensland and a portfolio of my business was done up by an expert."
That portfolio would now be handed to resource companies to market the business in an attempt to win mining supply contracts.
A growing success, Mr Richards said the past year had been a difficult process spent jumping through hoops as he attempted to gain accreditation.
He recently added online store to his growing business and said while the concept was new to the region it was attracting interest.
