I SAY A Little Prayer, What the World Needs Now, Close to You, Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head...

The hits of Burt Bacharach are the soundtrack to some of life's favourite and most poignant memories.

Tonight fans of the legendary American pianist and composer Burt Bacharach will get to hear these songs live at Jupiter's Hotel and Casino on the Gold Coast.

The performance is a one-off in this neck of the woods for the star who will take to the stage in the $20 million redeveloped theatre with his own band and singers.

He has already performed in Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth and at Sydney Opera House.

At yesterday's press conference, Bacharach spoke about being a romantic who had "fallen in love with love" and said he sang for the female ear.

Due to turn 83 on May 12, he added that, at his age, travel was the hardest thing about working and touring.

Bacharach's musical masterpieces have earned him 48 Top 10 hits, nine number one songs, a four-time Tony Award nominated Broadway musical, three Academy Awards and eight Grammy Awards.

Many of his hits were produced specifically for Dionne Warwick, whom he said was one of the most memorable stars he had worked with.

His songs have also been recorded by legendary names including Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, Linda Ronstadt, The Carpenters, Aretha Franklin, Sergio Mendes and Isaac Hayes.

In 2005, after six decades of writing love songs, Bacharach shifted his attention to his indignation over the state of the world, collaborating with Elvis Costello, Dr Dre, Rufus Wainwright, Chris Botti and others for At This Time. The album immediately became a critical success.

Tonight he is expected to perform many of his greatest hits, in his own, inimitable style of cool, charming showmanship.
