Pregnant women fit in building up their strength for labour day
PUSH it, push it real good.
Before the vigorous marathon that is labour, mums-to-be are being encouraged to put their health and fitness first with Preggi Bellies exercise classes.
Physiotherapist Lauren Gabriel founded Preggi Bellies 15 years ago when expecting her daughter.
She had been introduced to MediBall and was using it in her physio practice when she discovered no-one was using it for pregnancies.
"I approached my local gym to run classes and we were flooded with women," she said.
Preggi Bellies is an aerobics class using the MediBall, which supports the pelvic floor and engages the core.
Women learn how to correctly engage their pelvic floors while strengthening and toning those muscles they need to push.
"Labour can be like a marathon and like any marathon, you need to train up for the big day," Ms Gabriel said.
"Nobody can guarantee what kind of a labour you will have, but the fitter and healthier you are going in, the better you will be able to cope.
"Women in our program who end up having caesars, are also up and about faster than their counterparts as they are in better physical condition."
Ms Gabriel is working on bringing Preggi Bellies to the Coast early next year.
