Gladstone dad delivers baby on front seat of family car

BABY Max Francis Horsburgh could well be a future motorsport star, given his eagerness to enter the world in the front seat of the family car last week.

New dad Drew Horsburgh said the birth happened so fast there was hardly time to think, let alone panic, about what was going on.

"It certainly came on pretty quickly. I rang emergency services and the ambos were all busy and we were at Tannum Sands, so we jumped in the car and headed into town hoping to make it in time," he said.

"We got to Tannum Bridge and Sandy's (his wife) waters broke, so I headed straight to Boyne Island Ambulance Station."

The quick thinking detour saw the family, including two-year-old Grace, with all hands on deck to deliver their new addition safely into the world.

"I rang the Boyne ambos and the lady was just reassuring us, giving me a few tips, but it just happened really quickly," Mr Horsburgh said.

"By the time we got to the station his (baby Max) head was already out, so I just delivered him onto some towels."

Wife Sandy and newborn Max were back at home after a few days in hospital, with the possibility of a blood transfusion for Sandy luckily being avoided.

Drew said their daughter Grace had been a little helper to Sandy during the ordeal.

"Our two-year-old Grace was holding her mum's hand asking if she was okay," laughed Mr Horsburgh.

"As soon as Max was born Grace said, 'There's bubba', and she couldn't stop looking at her little brother."
