Brisbane ball club confirm return of Ipswich star
HIGHLY-regarded Ipswich baseballer Andrew Campbell will return to Holloway Field this season as the Brisbane Bandits chase a record fourth-consecutive Australian Baseball League title.
Campbell joins a handful of key faces returning to the all-conquering Bandits side for the 2018/19 season, including Logan Wade, Ryan Searle, Mitch Nilsson, Tim Atherton and Matt Timms.
The Bandits veterans will be joined by former Minnesota Twins left-hander Lewis Thorpe as the club's first new signing of the off-season.
Campbell's place at the Bandits was never in question, particularly after he and Wade were chosen to represent the ball club at the recent Chinese Baseball League's Home Run Derby.
The man Bandits fans love to call 'Soupy' repaid the faith by becoming the first international player to win the big-hitting challenge - boosting the Bandits' profile in Asia in the process.
It was a shrewd marketing ploy by the Bandits and Baseball Australia, with the competition set to welcome Geelong-Korea to a new-look ABL format this season.
The two-division system follows the standard US sports conference model.
The Bandits will play in the North-East Division, against Auckland, Canberra Cavalry and Sydney Blue Sox.
Adelaide Bite, Geelong-Korea, Melbourne Aces and Perth Heat make up the South-East Division.
Each team will play two, four-game series against each divisional rival, as well as one four-game series against each team in the opposing division.
Teams will play a total of 24 games against divisional rivals and 16 games against inter-divisional opponents.
The Bandits open their season with an inter-divisional match-up against Adelaide Bite from November 15-17.
