HAIL swept through the Sunshine Coast late yesterday, hitting Nambour and Maleny in the hinterland.

Storm cells rolled across towns near Gympie, including Imbil, Kandanga and Curra.

The Coast escaped relatively unscathed from the east-moving storms, after the cells had wreaked havoc in Toowoomba.

Weatherzone meteorologist Guy Dixon expected the cells to have moved offshore by last night, but said remnants of the storm could linger today.

"For the Sunshine Coast tomorrow (Thursday), there may be a couple showers," Mr Dixon said.

"Falls will be generally less than 5mm and conditions should be fairly stable and sunny in the week."

He said yesterday's hail was expected to be only brief given the storms' speed.

Mr Dixon said rainfall would have topped 10mm at the most in those areas caught directly underneath the storm cells.

The rainfall activity on the Coast, including last weekend's deluge, was a little out of the ordinary, he said.

"The heavy rain we're seeing in northern New South Wales and south-east Queensland is quite unusual for this time of year," Mr Dixon said.

Readers of The Daily played storm chasers on Facebook, reporting light hail at Belli Park, Noosa, Yandina and Caloundra West.
